SMA connector problem

Post by Sam » Thu Mar 03, 2011 10:59 pm

I had a problem with an SMA connector that I thought I'd mention in case someone else runs across it. My TG gets to the outside world through a panel-mount female-female connector. A cable attaches to the inside, coming from the TG amp. While I was messing with the TG amp, the TG output came and went. Sometimes it was strong; sometimes is was very weak at low frequency and modest at high frequency.

It turned out that when I screwed the inside cable to the panel connector a good connection was made until I made it very tight (hand-tight; I wasn't over-tightening). At a certain tightness, the cable center pin apparently was suddenly not making contact with its mate in the female-female connector, or maybe the problem was internal to that connector. All the parts I could see looked fine. I still can't imagine how this was happening, but I replaced the connector and all is fine.

The connector was one of the inexpensive Chinese types.
