Harmonic mixing

Post by Sam » Sat May 28, 2011 11:46 pm

I was curious about how well the MSA could detect a very high frequency signal using harmonic mixing, so I bought a $25 "oscillator" on eBay that covered 5-6 GHz, or some such range. Unfortunately, I think it was actually a tunable filter, so I was out of luck.

If anyone has a stable high-frequency signal source, it would be interesting to see if the MSA can detect it. This would require figuring out what frequency to tune the MSA to such that a harmonic of LO1 would have the proper relationship to the signal. Even if there is a net 50 dB conversion loss at the signal frequency, there should be some usable range there.
