Caution-Mislabeled Parts

Post by Phil Sittner » Thu May 03, 2012 2:59 am

I've just completed the build of Scotty's wonderful
spectrum analyzer and wish to share a head-scratching experience with those
about to build their own. When my unit was tested, the loop in PLO3 would not
lock. Attempts at part changing proved futile and finally I was able to talk
directly with Scotty and had him scratching his head as well. The process took
over two weeks to resolve and the culprit turned out to be mis-marked parts from
a very reputable vendor. The irony is that I had checked a sample of each value
of the passive components prior to installing them; all but ONE! I was supplied
1000pF capacitors that were marked as 100pF units. This also caused
problems in other portions of the system. So for those of you about to start
your build, please check all components and save yourself the headaches. I
should also add that the final product is worth the effort, in spite of some
serious head scratching.
